Basti is situated on the Eastern part of U.P on the inter section of Gorakhpur – Lucknow National highway no.28 and Kuano river . Basti became the Tehsil headquarters and in 1865 it was chosen as the headquarters of the newly established district. In ancient times Basti was known as Koshal and according to Satpath Brahman Koshal was a Vedic Aryan State. There are several sugar mills in basti due to higher production of sugar cane.Basti is a newly created division head quarter. Government fruit orchard is famous for the devlopment and preservational research of the new varities of fruits and trees.
