Azamgarh is an important district headquarters of Gorakhpur division in Purvanchal area of Uttar Pradesh. Located on the banks of the River Tonsh, the city as the other cities of its class is growing uncontrollably in the absence of any effective planning. Even though the town area of the city is a well-developed agricultural region, its economic base is weak, which has adverse impact on the economy of the whole area around it. Due to unplanned physical development as a result of population growth at the city level, the situation of unbalanced distribution of various land applications and facilities is becoming increasingly uneven.
For the purpose of developing the town in a planned and controlled manner as per the order of the Uttar Pradesh government and on the request of regulatory authority regulated area Azamgarh. The task of preparing the plans for the Azamgarh urban area started in the year 1985 by the Town and Country Planning Department, Uttar Pradesh’s Departmental Planning Section of Gorakhpur, and the Master Plan (format) prepared by the Gorakhpur divisional planning Section was approved in January 1986 after approval by the Controlling Authority, and was kept in the Azamgarh municipal office building for a period of one month to receive objection and suggestion from public.
In the context of various proposals and geo-experiments under the above Master Plan (draft) objections/suggestions were presented by numerous city residents.
Most of the objections / suggestions from these objections / suggestions, proposed park and play area in north, east and south of present day black population in the east of the bund near Alble Tharah, to be converted into agriculture / residential area and Biliriganj road and Engage in reducing proposed width of Kaliganj Marg (part of Gorakhpur Marg) Keeping in mind the desirability of systemic and controlled development of the sentiments expressed by the prejudices, availability of the city, it was decided by the Controlling Authority to make the following amendments in the proposed land-use in the Master plan format :-
- The present Kali Chaura located east of the dam near the Albal Tiraha up to the Tonsh River in the north, east and south of the population, proposed Parks and Playgrounds in the area,should be proposed Agricultural area by changing the land use.
- The proposed width of the route in the part of Paharpur Chowk Tiraha to Mukeriganj Tiraha should be reduced from 30 meters to 20 meters.
- The width of the route should be reduced from 18 meters to 12 meters, in the part upto the Meeting point of the 30 meter wide route proposed in the Master Plan, in the South of Green Chungi Tiraha to Kalinganj Tiraha.
The Master Plan (format) was finalized by incorporating the desired modifications mentioned above. In order to transmit the ultimately prepared Master Plan to the acceptance of the government, it was approved by the Controlling Authority, Azamgarh Regulated Zone in May 1986. Following the above approvals, the Master Plan is ready to be presented for acceptance of the government.
